Detection of people driving in the wrong direction

The LuWa group has deployed several new technologies that make use of presence sensors, Doppler radar and cameras. One of these is used to detect vehicles that are travelling the wrong way on motorway exit slip roads. If a driver is detected as driving in the wrong direction, the lighting on the slip road will instantly flash in order to warn both the inattentive driver and any oncoming traffic of the danger.

An alert is simultaneously sent to the PEREX centre in Daussoulx, which monitors and manages all traffic on the motorway network so that they are able to deal with the incident.

300 motorway exit slip roads in Wallonia are currently fitted with a contraflow detection system. A driver who is driving in the wrong direction is reported on average every three days in Wallonia, while accidents that involve such a driver are 7.5 times more fatal. Deploying this technology on Wallonia's motorways is therefore an essential step forward with regard to road safety. The safety of users is a key tenet of Lighting Plan 4.0: installing this system, which is the first of its kind in Europe, is major progress in the deployment of smart motorways.
